Having met through their partners at an exhibition of John’s work in 1996 they have been exhibiting together and welcome and enjoy the great contrast there is between their two approaches to art. Harry is inspired and influenced by nature, along with spiritual awareness and vivid imagination. He prefers to leave the meaning of some of the images he creates to the viewer to decide. He is greatly inspired by Barbara Hepworth who once said, ‘Sculptures do reside in emptiness but nothing happens until the living human being encounters the image.’ The majority of Harry’s work is figurative and abstract in sea defence timbers and driftwood. Harry says, ‘Working with wood has the most satisfying appeal. It has a magical quality that is never completely at rest. What nature has to offer and what man discards inspires me.’ He doesn’t generally have preconceived ideas but follows the path the media he is working with dictates, to expose the form within. John draws his inspiration originally from Cezanne’s pursuit of the structure in nature but more recently also from American artists such as De Koonig, Jasper Johns and Cy Twombly. He quotes Phillip Guston when he says ’Painting becomes a tug-of-war between what you know and what you don’t know’ John’s work emerge from natural acts: images and marks from the subconscious, letter forms painted and repainted over. ‘They have absolutely nothing to do with good taste,’ he says.
